Shem, ne?!
House of Shem exists because cultural programming forgot what it was for. We're a Johannesburg-based arts, culture and consultancy organisation built around a single stubborn idea: that every event, every experience, every gathering should start with WHY before it starts with format. We run intimate listening sessions, a film club with a proper home, a progressive electronic music series, guided cultural journeys through the city, and a consultancy practice that helps other organisations stop copying and start thinking. None of it is accidental. All of it is combinatorial — familiar things, put together differently, in service of something real. We're not trying to be the most visible cultural organisation in Johannesburg. We're trying to be the most purposeful one. The rest, as they say, is logistics.
Oh, our name? The name draws from South African slang expressing both sympathy and inclusion - acknowledging difficulty whilst creating belonging. It captures our ethos perfectly: we see the challenges in cultural programming whilst creating joyful, connective, transformative experiences that serve a real purpose.
