Shem, ne?!
"Shem" is one of those South African words that does several things at once — it acknowledges difficulty, expresses genuine empathy, and pulls people closer rather than pushing them away. It's the sound of someone actually seeing you.
That's the house we're trying to build.
House of Shem works across two interconnected practices: consultancy and event programming. On the consultancy side, we work with cultural institutions, venues, and organisations to strip away format assumptions, rediscover the purpose behind their programming, and redesign experiences that create genuine engagement rather than repeat familiar patterns.
Our events — including The Long Take Film Club, Listening Spaces, and //WUNDERGROUND — are not side projects but working proof of the methodology: each one begins with a clear purpose, applies combinatorial thinking to find unexpected approaches, and creates conditions for real self-discovery. The drive behind both is the same — Johannesburg's cultural landscape deserves programming that asks something of people, and we believe that when you start with why, the how tends to follow.
Let’s talk!
Questions, remarks, ideas?
You see, community comes from sharing values!
