THE INTERVAL

Johannesburg's creative economy is dense with people who never quite meet each other — venue managers, producers, festival organisers, funders, educators, all doing adjacent work in separate rooms. Most sector gatherings exist to pitch, panel, or perform expertise at each other, which means the actual peer relationships — the ones that make collaboration possible later — rarely get room to form. An industry mixer, done properly, isn't networking in the transactional sense. It's a bet that if you give people in the same ecosystem a low-stakes, recurring space with no agenda beyond conversation, something useful will emerge on its own terms — a collaboration, a referral, a shared problem solved over a drink rather than in a funding meeting. That requires letting go of outcomes we can measure or claim credit for. We're not convening this to generate leads for House of Shem. We're convening it because we think the sector is one genuine common room away from working better together, and we're willing to trust that process without needing to control what comes out of it.
