HOUSE OF SHEM PRESENTS: THE LONG TAKE FILM CLUB

South African Films You Missed — August 2026

There’s a particular kind of shem in realising a brilliant South African film came and went without you ever hearing its name. This August, The Long Take Film Club is putting two of them back on a big screen where they belong.

7 August — Black Burns Fast

Directed by Sandulela Asanda and produced by Cait Pansegrouw, this is the kind of film that deserved a bigger conversation than it got first time round. We’re giving it one. Stick around after the credits for a Q&A with the team behind it.

26 August — Beyond Graceland

Produced by Carolyn Carew, this is the second title in our “you missed it” season — proof that some of the country’s most interesting filmmaking happens quietly, away from the noise. Q&A to follow this screening too.

Both nights run the usual Long Take way: last Wednesday of the month, 19:00, at The Bioscope in Milpark. Membership is free and always has been — no gatekeeping, just an invitation. Pizza, beers, and Potlood the dachshund hold court in the courtyard after, once the Q&A wraps.

Tickets for each screening are sold individually through thebioscope.co.za. Join the WhatsApp broadcast channel to stay ahead of the season.

Ag shem, some films deserve a second chance to be seen properly.
